Mallow Ninebark (Physocarpus malvaceus)
Ninebark is a common shrub on Moscow Mountain in areas where Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir are prevalent. It grows east of the Cascades.
It is easily propagated, and can become too
thick if not pruned or browsed by animals. It has white blossoms in 2" clusters in late May or early June. It grows to 5'
generally although it can grow taller (10') if it grows into small trees which provide support. It is a member of the Rose family.
Its light brown bark exfoliates thus the name "ninebark". It can be used as an ornamental and can be pruned to make it more compact.
Other ninebark varieties are grown in the nursery trade and various cultivars have been developed in the U.S. and in England. These
cultivars take on golden or purple leaf coloration.
